About Mental Workouts

In psychospiritual flourishing, the term “Mental Workout” takes into account the exercise of deeply quieting the mind, using intentional focus, developing new awareness, replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, and introducing new ideas and ways of thinking, that contribute to an improved sense of well-being and an interconnectedness with all things (Dacher, 2006).
Research indicates that in as little as one hour per day spent in the practice of a mental workout, accumulative beneficial results are seen and well-being is enhanced.  And just like any training regime when the practice is stopped, the benefits recede as well, thus it is very important to establish a regular life affirming routine.
I can implement mental workouts by setting aside 30 minutes in the morning and evening.  It’s not necessarily the length of time spent in a mental workout but the consistency that will bring about the desired results.  In organizing my daily events, it is much better to start my day with a mental workout because it will contribute positively to everything else that goes on during the day.  It is also beneficial to end my day with a mental workout because it will contribute to a peaceful nights rest.  How great is that?!

I think it is awesome that you are going to set aside 30 minutes a day to meditate. It is very beneficial for each of us to do so, but apparently you are more dedicated than I. I just don't have daily meditation high enough on my priority list because I have not made time to do so except to complete assignments. Good luck and keep up the great job.

Although I have meditated for years on an irregular basis, it has not always been high on my list either, but with all the new beneficial information we are learning about, I would love to develop my mind, body and spirit in such a way to vastly improve my life experience. I truly believe this is attainable and I am ready for this part in my journey. Good luck with your personal development too Julie.

I enjoyed your post. I think that having a regular regime of a mental workout is a great idea. This is exactly what I do. I meditate and speak words to myself in the morning and at night. I also continue throughout the day. It really works. I suggest you look at where you want to go and how you want to be and speak that.

Barb it is awesome that you are going to have a more regular routine. I think focusing your thoughts is a good thing and can have a lot of positive outcomes. I don't know if meditation is my deal, but I do like to just have quiet time and let my thoughts just flow. Maybe one of these days I can get on board with meditation, but for now I'm good with my quiet time.
